Stress-Free Florida Homeschool Portfolio Reviews

If you're new to homeschooling, the annual portfolio review can sound a little intimidating—but it really doesn't have to be! A portfolio review is simply an opportunity to celebrate your child's learning and document the educational progress they've made throughout the year.

This evaluation fulfills Florida's annual requirement for families participating in the Home Education Program, whether you're registered with your local school district or homeschooling through the FES-UA (Unique Abilities Scholarship) Home Education option.

Under Florida law, a home education portfolio includes:

• A log of educational activities maintained at the same time instruction occurs, along with the titles of any reading materials used.

• Samples of your child's work, such as worksheets, writing, workbooks, projects, artwork, or other materials completed throughout the year.

The best part? These requirements can be as simple or as elaborate as you choose. Some families keep a planner and a folder of work samples, while others enjoy creating binders, scrapbooks, or digital portfolios. There is no "perfect" portfolio, and your homeschool doesn't have to look like anyone else's. The goal is simply to document your child's learning in a way that works for your family.

You don't need to save every worksheet or assignment. A representative sample from the beginning, middle, and end of the school year is typically all that's needed. Many families also like to include photos of field trips, books they've enjoyed, nature studies, hobbies, sports, volunteer work, and other meaningful learning experiences.

As part of the evaluation, I also like to connect with your student. This isn't a test or an interview—just a relaxed conversation about what they've learned and enjoyed throughout the year. Depending on your child's age, personality, and communication style, this can be a brief phone call, a simple questionnaire, or another format that is tailored to their unique needs. My goal is for every child to feel comfortable and successful.

As a Florida-certified teacher and veteran homeschool mom, I believe portfolio reviews should be a positive experience—not a stressful one. My goal is to make the process simple, encouraging, and relaxed while celebrating all the learning that has taken place throughout your homeschool year. Most reviews can be completed through email and a brief phone call, with in-person reviews also available throughout the greater Jacksonville area.
